Scope and Content Harbour, Kirkcaldy, Fife There has been a harbour at this point since medieval times, and it was the focal point for the growth of Kirkcaldy. A new east pier was built in about 1600, and was enlarged several times, notably in 1843 by James Leslie. The harbour was much extended into its present form in 1906-08 by Rendel and Robertson. This shows the east pier of the harbour from the northern road entrance, with two coasters moored at the east quay of the inner harbour. The nearer one is discharging grain into the silos of Robert Hutchison and Co Ltd's maltings and flour and provender mills, using a pneumatic elevator. The harbour improvements of 1906-08 created an inner wet dock and an outer basin, The east pier was extended as a breakwater and a south breakwater pier was constructed. The new works were executed in mass concrete. The grain and timber trades were the last users of the harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
