Scope and Content St Mary's Canvas Works, High Street, Kirkcaldy, Fife The first part of this works was built in 1864 to weave coarse canvas from tow yarn, made from short flax fibres. This cloth was used to make floorcloth by applying many layers of linseed-oil based paint. Floorcloth was a precursor of linoleum, and from the 1880s the works made the jute-cloth base for linoleum. This shows the works from the south. The flat-roofed three-storey block, the south end of which is seen here, was added in 1914 to the single-storey range of 1864 at the north end of the works, part of which can be seen in the distance. The works was still in use in 1970. The works was subsequently closed and the three-storey block has been converted into part of Fife College, a further education college. The interior of the single-storey range has been removed to create space for car parking, but the wall facing the street has been retained. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
