Scope and Content Top floor of maltings from north, Dailuaine Distillery, Aberlour, Moray Dailuaine Distillery, founded in 1852, produces malt whisky which is also used as part of the Johnnie Walker blended whiskies. It was rebuilt in 1884-7, and again after fires in 1917 and 1959-60, and continues to be modernised. A dark grains plant producing cattle feed from the by-products of the whisky-making process was added in 1965. This shows the top floor of the maltings building, once used as a granary. The roof is supported by a complicated arrangement of wooden latticed trusses on cast iron columns. Windows fitted with vents are placed at intervals around the stone walls. The first pagoda roof vent was installed at this distillery by the architect Charles Chree Doig in 1889 on top of a 24.38m-high malt kiln. Unfortunately the kiln was destroyed by fire in 1917, but by then the design had been publicised by 'The Wine Trade Review' and was adopted by most distilleries as a means of efficient ventilation.
