Scope and Content Aerial view of St Kilda, Western Isles This is an aerial view of St Kilda from the south. To the lower right of the photograph is the island of Dùn, which provided shelter for boats entering Village Bay, seen in the centre of the photograph. St Kilda is very hilly, with Oiseval to the right and Conachair behind the village. The hills protected the low-lying land around the village. The structure of the village, with its one main street, seen in the middle of the fertile green area, dates to the 1830s. In the 19th century the islanders grew oats, barley, cabbages, potatoes, turnips and carrots. They kept cattle and sheep, but their main source of food was birds such as gannets, puffins and fulmars. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
