Scope and Content Pentland Chapel from west, Mortonhall Crematorium, No 30B Howdenhall Road, Edinburgh Mortonhall Crematorium was designed in 1962 by architects Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson and built 1964-7 for the Corporation of the City of Edinburgh. The design features a composition of white aggregate-faced walls, timber louvres, narrow coloured glass windows and a pyramidal rooflight covered in zinc over the main chapel. This shows the small, or Pentland Chapel. The entrance is indicated by dark wooden louvred boards above double doors, flanked by white walls with sloping upper edges. Behind this is a zinc-covered drum with a glass top which lights the catafalque (stand for a coffin) within the building. The Pentland Chapel seats 50, compared to the 250 in the Main Chapel, and is used for smaller memorial services. Both chapels are very similar in internal design, with plain walls and pine benches angled towards the catafalque. This crematorium has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
