Scope and Content Entrance to Kilmahew House and north side of the main block from the east, St Peter's College, Cardross, Argyll & Bute St Peter's College was commissioned in 1959 as a seminary (training college) for Roman Catholic priests, to be created adjacent to Kilmahew House which was built in 1868 to designs by John Burnet (demolished 1995). The college was designed 1959-63 by Isi Metzstein, J Cowell and Andrew McMillan of the architectural firm of Gillespie Kidd & Coia, and completed by 1966. It ceased to function as a training college in 1979, and was used as a drug rehabilitation centre 1983-7. It is now derelict. This shows the carved stone entrance porch to Kilmahew House (right), which rested on ornate columns and featured arches with a rope motif. To the left can be seen the huge main block of the college with its receding tiers of balconies which once housed the student priests in small cells (study bedrooms) above the chapel and refectory (dining room) areas. Kilmahew House was used as a residence for the college staff and tutors. The architects of the new buildings were concerned to respect the older building in whose grounds they were constructing the college. They did this by choosing building materials in similar warm colours to the stone of the house, and by setting the buildings back from each other. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
