Scope and Content David Hume Tower from the west, the Adam Ferguson Building, George Square Theatre, and Main Library, University of Edinburgh, George Square, Edinburgh George Square was selected for the extension of the University of Edinburgh in the late 1940s. Several large new buildings and towers were constructed during the 1960s, to designs by the following architects: Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson with Andrew Merrylees (Main Library); Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall & Partners (David Hume Tower, William Robertson Building, Adam Ferguson Building and the George Square Theatre); and Alan Reiach, Eric Hall & Partners (Appleton Tower). This shows the south side of George Square with the raised walkways which join the main buildings. Part of the library (built 1965-7), with its balconies can be seen (right). Next to this is George Square Theatre and the Adam Ferguson Building (built 1964-7). The 14-storeyed building is David Hume Tower (built 1960-3). A variety of building materials are used to add interest to these Modern buildings, which house lecture theatres, tutorial rooms and libraries. These range from reinforced concrete and glass, to natural stone, golden ashlar stone and slate. The University of Edinburgh George Square Redevelopment has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
