Scope and Content Station, Station Brae, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This station was opened in 1849 by the Edinburgh & Hawick Railway. As one of the major stations on the line it was provided with a large goods station, which was later enlarged to provide marshalling yard accommodation. Right up to closure Galashiels was a railhead for a large part of the Borders. This shows the goods yard from the north-east, from a south-bound special train. The vans, wagons and brake vans are typical of provision for goods and mineral traffic in the 1960s. The tweed mill in the background is an 1866 addition to Nether Mill, in Huddersfield Street. In 1862 the Hawick branch was extended by the Border Union Railway to Carlisle, and a connection with the Midland Railway, giving the North British Railway a through route to England, marketed as the Waverley Route. The whole line was closed in January 1969, and this was the last excursion. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
