Scope and Content Billiard Room, Leithen Lodge, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders This photograph of the billiard room of Leithen Lodge was taken c.1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house, dating from the early 19th century, was remodelled in 1885-7 by Sydney Mitchell for George Miller-Cunningham. This white-painted room has a barrel-vaulted ceiling with an arcaded plasterwork frieze, and an arched inglenook with seating by the fire. The leather sofas flanking the scoreboard are built on raised platforms to allow a clear view of the billiard table. The billiard room was in the male domain of the house, and was one of the few rooms where gentlemen could gather to smoke outside the company of ladies. Mitchell isolated the room in the east wing, linked to the rest of the house by the conservatory. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
