Scope and Content Smoking Room, Central Station Hotel, No 99 Gordon Street, Glasgow The Central Station Hotel, built in 1882-4 for the Caledonian Railway Company, was extended in 1900-5 by the architect, James Miller. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned in 1906 to photograph the new interiors. This rather gloomy room, with its dark panelled walls and leather-upholstered chairs, also served as a writing room. The round tables were designed for smokers, with a bell to ring for service, a 'match striker', and an ashtray underneath on the floor. The smoking room, very much part of the male domain, allowed gentlemen to smoke and discuss business outside the company of ladies. However, smoking rooms gradually went out of fashion as the practice of smoking became more and more general. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
