Scope and Content Union Railway Bridge, Clyde Street, Glasgow The first viaduct on this site was built in 1864-7 for the City of Glasgow Union Railway. It was a two-track bridge, with parallel lattice trusses. In 1898-1902 it was rebuilt as a four-track structure to serve the enlarged St Enoch Station, as a much more substantial structure. This shows the viaduct from the south-west. As can be seen there are arched steel trusses supported on red sandstone-clad piers, with short parallel trusses over the roads on each side. The masonry of the piers is carried up to form castellated terminals. The detailing of the faces of the steelwork strongly suggests that there was originally intended to be an ornamental cast-iron cladding applied, as in the North Bridge, Edinburgh. Since the closure of St Enoch Station in 1967 the bridge has had minimal use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
