Scope and Content Tighard, Canna, Highland, from south In 1905 Tighard was built for Robert Thom, who was laird of Canna between 1881 and 1911. Two storeys in height, and three bays wide with a slated roof, it was built close to Canna House which had previously been used as the laird's house. Thom also planted a great many trees around and behind Tighard. There are only a few native species of tree which grow on Canna - rowan, sallow, hazel, creeping willow and aspen. As demonstrated by pollen analysis, other native species which existed in the past included Scots pine, alder, and birch. Canna is one of the most westerly of the Small Isles and is situated to the north-west of Rhum. The island is low-lying and is a mixture of fertile ground, bog and moorland. In 1981 Canna was gifted to The National Trust for Scotland by Dr J L Campbell. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
