Scope and Content Detail of newel post, ground floor staircase, Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont was built between 1864 and 1870 as the home of its architect, Frederick Thomas Pilkington, (1832-98). A lavishly ornamented villa in the Romanesque style, it was subdivided into flats in 1929. This photograph shows the carved wooden newel post on the staircase. A heraldic lion with scroll sits above Ionic capitals with female masks below. The whole staircase is richly carved in geometric patterns and features similar posts. This villa retains the richness of ornamentation which we associate with the Victorian age. Carved woodwork of high quality, entire schemes of plasterwork, and stained glass complement the carved stone and contrasting surface textures of the exterior. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
