Scope and Content Detail of decorative plasterwork above the fireplace in the first floor drawing room, Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont, or Park House as it is also called, is a Romanesque villa with fine decorative details. It was built 1864-70 and designed by architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington (1832-98) as his own home. It was sub-divided in 1929. This photograph shows the plasterwork above the fireplace. The scene shows two dog-like creatures sculpting and painting. It is framed by scrolling plaster foliage. The mirror above, and the rest of the walls are covered in similar lavish decoration. Plain plasterwork decorations were usually completed on site, whereas more complicated designs would be cast in sections in a workshop. These would be made in moulds of hide glue or plaster, and the decorative details or 'enrichments' assembled later. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
