Scope and Content View from south-east of first-floor bathroom, Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont was the home of architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington (1832-98). It was built between 1864 and 1870 of pink and cream sandstone, lavishly carved. It is sometimes known as Park House. The villa was sub-divided into flats in 1929. This bathroom has panelled woodwork around the window, which has been painted white, and a stained glass window. The bath has modern mosaic tilework and separate taps for bath and shower. The tiled fireplace would have once heated the room. Interior bathrooms, like this example, were the preserve of the rich in Victorian times. Poorer families would have bathed in a tin bath in front of the fire, and used outside lavatories, which they often shared with other families. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
