Scope and Content View from south-east of staircase on first floor of Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont, or Park House as it is sometimes called, is a large villa in the Romanesque style. It was designed by the architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington (1832-98) as his own home, and built 1864-70. This richly decorated house was sub-divided in 1929. This photograph shows the main staircase of the house, richly carved from wood in the Renaissance style. The balusters are carved in angular shapes, and the newel posts with a design of fruits and flowers. A stained glass window lights the stairwell. This staircase with its warm carved woodwork contrasts with the deep red pile of the carpet, the white-painted wooden floorboards, pale walls and the rich colours in the stained glass armorial pattern. The opulent effect is typical of the Victorian age. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
