Scope and Content View from east of Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont, also known as the Park House, was built to designs by architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington (1832-98) between 1864 and 1870. It is a large Romanesque villa, elaborately decorated both inside and out. The villa was sub-divided in 1929. This photograph shows the main entrance to the house, with its arched doorway, reached by a flight of steps. On the left, bow windows form a tower with conical roof. The pink and cream sandstone is incised or carved, and laid to form patterns. This elaborate villa vividly shows the Victorian love of ornamentation. This house presents a huge variety of surface textures, colours and forms. The interior features moulded plasterwork, set against mirrors, and a carved, Renaissance-style staircase.
