Scope and Content View from east-south-east of Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont, also known as Park House, was built 1864-70 to designs by architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington (1832-98), as his own house. Richly ornamented both inside and out, it is a Romanesque-style villa on three main storeys, plus attics and basements. The villa is built of pink bull-faced sandstone with cream ashlar dressings. It has arched bow and bay windows, which form towers. Carved stone animal heads and foliate designs decorate the corbels under the eaves and between the windows. The house was built so as to appear to be no taller than two storeys high plus attics from the road, when in fact it is much larger. The feuing contract for the land stated that houses could only be two-storeyed, which led to this ingenious planning. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
