Scope and Content Detail of staircase balustrade, first-floor staircase, Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont was built between 1864 and 1870 as the home of its architect, Frederick Thomas Pilkington, (1832-98). It is a villa in the Romanesque style, with fine interior and exterior decoration. It was subdivided into flats in 1929. This shows the balusters, or turned and carved wooden posts which form the guard rails of the staircase. They have been worked on a lathe, then carved with geometric designs. The newel post, centre, carries a design of fruits and flowers. This villa retains the richness of ornamentation which we associate with the Victorian age. Carved woodwork of high quality, entire schemes of plasterwork, and stained glass complement the carved stone and contrasting surface textures of the exterior. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
