Scope and Content View from south-east of attic room, Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont was built between 1864 and 1870 as the home of its architect, Frederick Thomas Pilkington, (1832-98). It is a villa in the Romanesque style, with fine interior and exterior decoration. It was sub-divided into flats in 1929. This photograph shows the attic room of Egremont, with its unusually-shaped ceiling, a result of the changing roofline above. A cast iron fireplace with fender would have heated the room, which is lit by a circular window. The floor is covered in lino. The attics in large houses were often used as sleeping quarters for the household servants. Food, lodgings and uniforms were often provided as part of the job as a chambermaid, scullery maid, groom or valet. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
