Scope and Content View from west of chimneys of Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont was built between 1864 and 1870 as the home of its architect, Frederick Thomas Pilkington, (1832-98). It is a villa in the Romanesque style, with fine interior and exterior decoration. It was sub-divided into flats in 1929. This photograph shows the unusual linked chimneys which tower above the villa. They are cut from stone, with terracotta 'crown' pots set into the top. A strip of carved decoration around the linking band adds extra richness to the design. Chimney pots of terracotta were produced in a wide variety of designs in the Victorian era, such as 'crowns', queens', and 'castles'. They add height and interest to a building and prevent down-draughts, which would cause smoke to enter the rooms below. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
