Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Midlothian County Buildings, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh Midlothian County Buildings were designed in 1900-5 by the architect, James Macintyre Henry, to house the main offices of the county council of Midlothian. The interior was photographed in 1905 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The marble pilastered entrance hall has a columned screen to the inner hall which opens on the left onto the main staircase. The floor is covered in an interesting geometric pattern of black and white marble tiles which seem to lead the way. The county of Midlothian ('Edinburghshire') was bounded on the east by Haddington, on the south by Selkirk and Peebles, on the south-west by Lanark and on the north-west by Linlithgow. It had 12 miles of coastline and, in 1887, a population of 389,164. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
