Scope and Content Midlothian County Buildings, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, from the east Midlothian County Buildings, designed by the architect James Macintyre Henry, were photographed in 1905 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The buildings, completed in 1905, replaced the old County Hall which stood on the site. The east front of the building has a rusticated ground floor and giant order of paired Roman Ionic columns. A frieze, carved in high relief by the sculptor, William Birnie Rhind, represents the county's main industries of Agriculture, Mining and Fishing. The county of Midlothian was defined in 1887 as 'a maritime county in south-east Scotland, mainly under pasture, the principal crops being oats, barley, turnips and potatoes. It consisted mainly of carboniferous strata, the coal being extensively worked'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
