Scope and Content Royal High School, Regent Road, Edinburgh, from the south-west This photograph of the Royal High School was taken in 1895 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The school, designed in a Greek Doric style by the architect, Thomas Hamilton, stands on a curved site on the north side of Regent Road. The school has a magnificent centrepiece based on the Temple of Theseus in Athens, and low colonnaded wings which spread out on either side. A small temple block stands at each end, its portico facing inwards and aligned with the bend in the road. The Royal High School is one of Edinburgh's notable buildings that justify the city's nickname of the 'Athens of the North'. Thomas Hamilton's main elements for its design were the Greek temple, and the Greek 'stoa' or market colonnade. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
