Scope and Content Royal High School, Regent Road, Edinburgh, from the south-west The Royal High School, designed in a Greek Doric style by the architect, Thomas Hamilton, stands on a curved site on the north side of Regent Road. This photograph of the exterior was taken in 1895 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The school has a centrepiece, based on the Temple of Theseus in Athens, which rises well above the roadway. Low colonnaded wings spread out on each side to pilastered pavilions, beyond which lies a small temple aligned with the bend in the road. The city fathers resolved to build a replacement building for the ancient High School in Edinburgh's Old Town that would out-do other schools in Edinburgh. The final cost of the new building was £24,000, and it served as a school from 1829 until 1968. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
