Scope and Content Morning Room, Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh The morning room of Craigcrook Castle dates from 1815 when it was formed from the 16th-century hall which occupied the whole area of the oldest part of the house. The room was photographed in 1927 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has an oriel window, with a fitted window seat, to one side of the fireplace, and elegant consoled doorcases. The late 17th-century style ceiling decoration was possibly added during a later remodelling of the house in 1891. The morning room was the principal sitting room of the house when it was leased to Lord Jeffrey, the Scottish judge and literary critic. Here, until his death in 1850, he entertained politicians and authors, including Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
