Scope and Content Entrance Tower, Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh Craigcrook Castle, which dates from the 16th century, became the home of Lord Jeffrey in 1815. This photograph of the castle's main entrance tower was taken in 1927 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The entrance tower, added to the north front of the house by Lord Jeffrey in 1835, is by the distinguished architect, William Henry Playfair. A flight of stone steps with a Classical balustrade leads up to the main door, set at an angle in the tower. The Scottish judge, Francis, Lord Jeffrey (1773-1850) was a celebrated literary critic who lived at Craigcrook Castle until his death. Here he continued to pronounce on literary matters and offered encouragement to authors such as Charles Dickens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
