Scope and Content Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh, from the north Craigcrook Castle, a 16th-century tower-house, was largely remodelled in the 19th century. The house, in a splendid woodland setting at the foot of Corstorphine Hill, was photographed c.1891 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The crowstepped and turreted north front of the house contains the entrance tower (centre), added in 1835 by the architect, William Henry Playfair, and a castellated drawing-room wing (right), added in 1815 for the then owner, Lord Jeffrey. Lord Jeffrey (1773-1850), a Scottish judge and celebrated literary critic, bought the house in 1815, and lived there until his death in 1850. Here he entertained all the great politicians of the early 19th century, and authors such as Sir Walter Scott. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
