Scope and Content Kirkcudbright Harbour, Dumfries & Galloway Kirkcudbright was an important port in medieval Scotland, and though its relative significance declined, until the coming of the railway in 1864 it was a focal point for coastal trade, with a basin off the River Dee. The basin was filled in and the harbour redeveloped in 1910. This shows the 1910 quay from the south, with a granary. built of reinforced concrete, on the right, probably part of the harbour reconstruction scheme. The engineers for the harbour reconstruction, and probably for the granary, were J & H V Eaglesham of Ayr. In the 1960s there was still coastal trade in petroleum products to Kirkcudbright, but not in grain. The granary has been demolished, and the coastal tanker service has ended. The harbour is now used only by fishing boats and pleasure craft. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
