Scope and Content Scotland Street Station, Scotland Street Tunnel, Edinburgh This station was opened in 1847 by the Edinburgh, Leith & Granton Railway, at the southern end of the Scotland Street Tunnel, through which trains were hauled by a cable to a station at right angles to Waverley Station. From Scotland Street the line was locomotive worked to Leith and Granton. This shows the station looking towards the tunnel leading to Leith and Granton. The station was closed to passengers in 1868 but remained open for goods until 1967, mainly for coal traffic, handled at the siding on the left. The goods shed is behind the coal wagon. The Edinburgh, Leith & Granton Railway was a link in the first rail route up the east coast of Scotland. At Granton there was a ferry to Burntisland, then a railway to Tayport, another ferry to Broughty Ferry, then rail connections to Aberdeen and beyond. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
