Scope and Content Sitting Room, No 10 Lowther Terrace, Kelvinside, Glasgow No 10 Lowther Terrace was designed in c.1900 by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, as a townhouse for John Traill Cargill. This photograph of the sitting room of the house was photographed in 1906 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This cosy room on the ground floor of the house has an elegant plasterwork ceiling and plain cornice. The silk-skirted electric light fitting has counterbalanced weights so that it can be raised and lowered, and was popular over dining-room tables. Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) was a perfectionist, taking great care to get the composition of his pictures right. He used daylight to photograph interiors, giving his pictures a softness and a naturalness that could never be achieved by the use of flash. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
