Scope and Content Inner Hall, No 10 Lowther Terrace, Kelvinside, Glasgow This photograph of the inner hall at No 10 Lowther Terrace, Glasgow, was taken in 1906 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house, designed c.1900 by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, was built for John Traill Cargill. The inner hall, added as an extension to the west of the house in 1904, has an elaborate chimneypiece with a stone overmantel carved with bas-relief baluster designs. The room is lit by an electric light fitting which mimics a chandelier. Although electric lighting became popular in the Edwardian era, in 1910 less than five per cent of households had electricity. Public supplies were available in cities, but in poorer households candles and oil lamps were still the main source of light. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
