Scope and Content Sorn Old Bridge, East Ayrshire This bridge was built in the early 18th century, probably to replace a ford over the River Ayr. It appears to have been built to give access to the parish church, which is opposite the north end of the bridge. This shows the bridge from the south-east. It is a very fine example of a late 17th-/early 18th-century bridge, with its almost semicircular arches, dressed stone arch rings with drip moulds, and massive triangular cutwaters. It has an appreciable hump, and the carriageway is narrow. This bridge was effectively by-passed for most traffic by the New Bridge, also a two-span masonry structure, but with segmental arches and a wider carriageway. The old bridge is, however, still open to motor traffic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
