Scope and Content Herdman's (Haymarket) Flour Mills, Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh These mills were founded before 1852, as they appear on the 1:10,500 Ordnance Survey map surveyed in that year. They were subsequently much rebuilt and extended. In 1937 they were owned by J Herdman & Sons Ltd, flour millers. This shows the mills from the south-east, looking across Haymarket Goods Station. Originally designed to mill by grindstones, the mill was converted to mill using rollers. The buildings on the right are the reinforced concrete roller mill and wheat silos, probably built in the early 20th century. This large complex had closed by 1966, and was partly derelict. It had been demolished by 1969, when a large office block was built on the site. The reinforced concrete structures proved resistant to demolition. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
