Scope and Content Tea Room, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh The tea room of Charles Jenner & Company, Princes Street, was photographed in 1895 by the distinguished Victorian photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room, stylishly ornate, was a popular meeting place for unaccompanied ladies. The room, under its Jacobean ceiling, is carefully set out for tea. The tables are covered with crisp white tablecloths and napkins, and the serving table displays an array of cakes and scones. The aspidistra plants were popular in Victorian interiors. Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) took great trouble with the composition of his pictures, often carefully positioning objects and furniture. His work forms a unique record of the interior of a late 19th-century Scottish department store. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
