Scope and Content Curtain Department, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh This picture of the curtain department of Charles Jenner & Company's Princes Street store is one of a series of photographs of the interior taken by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, to celebrate the store's opening in 1895. The curtain department displays a range of fabrics with lighter materials carefully draped at the windows. The fabric on the sofa, and the arrangement of the chairs suggests that they have been positioned by Lemere for the photograph. Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) was a perfectionist, carefully manoeuvring his camera until a composition was right. He spent a great deal of time making curtains fall correctly and plumping out cushions in order to record rooms in the best way possible. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
