Scope and Content Carpet Department, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh This photograph of the carpet department in Jenners, Princes Street, was taken in 1895 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The store, with over 60 departments, was, when it opened in 1895, one of the largest in Britain. The department, lit by elegant electric light fittings, one of the new technologies of the time, is lined with rugs, rolled up and neatly displayed on shelves. The rugs and carpet runners on the floor may have been carefully arranged for the photograph. In 1895, Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) was commissioned to photograph Charles Jenner & Company's Princes Street store. The resulting pictures form one of the few, well-defined and extensive records of the interior of a late Victorian department store. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
