Scope and Content View across the central well of Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh This view across the central well of the magnificent galleried hall of Jenners, Princes Street, was photographed by the distinguished photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. When it opened in 1895, Jenners was one of the largest department stores in Britain. The three-storeyed top-lit hall, with an open timber roof, rises the full height of the building. The consoled galleries house a variety of departments, and incorporate the thistle motif on their balustrades, appropriate for a Scottish department store. Jenners department store was built on six storeys and supplied everything from ladies' and children's clothes, lingerie, millinery and haberdashery to furniture, fancy goods, carpets and china. It has often been referred to as the 'Harrods of Edinburgh'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
