Scope and Content Furniture Gallery, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh In 1895, the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944), was commissioned to photograph Charles Jenner & Company's Princes Street store. This photograph, one of several taken of the interior, shows the store's furniture gallery. The gallery displays a large selection of late 19th-century furniture, including heavily ornamented cabinets and an array of carefully-positioned chairs. The potted aspidistra plants were an essential part of the fashionable Victorian drawing room. Charles Jenner & Company's Princes Street Store was designed in 1893-5 by Sir William Hamilton Beattie. When it opened in 1895, it was one of the largest department stores in Britain with over 60 departments selling a huge range of merchandise. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
