Scope and Content Hydraulic Power Station, Queen's Dock, Glasgow This dock was first planned in 1846, but not built until 1872-80. Built as Stobcross Dock, it was renamed Queen's Dock when Queen Victoria opened it in 1877. It had two large basins. There was originally a road and rail swing bridge over the entrance. This shows the entrance to the dock from the River Clyde, with the elevated control room to the left. The building to the right was a hydraulic power station, designed by John Carrick, architect, to provide hydraulic power to operate the swing bridge and cranes in the vicinity. This dock closed at the end of 1969, and has been filled in. The Scottish Exhibition Centre and a large hotel have been built on the site, which is largely covered by car parks for these establishments. The pumping station is now a visitor centre for the sailing ship 'Glenlee', moored at Yorkhill Quay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
