Scope and Content View from south-east of the Hill House, Upper Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh Hill House, Helensburgh, designed in 1902-4 by the architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, stands on a hill with panoramic views over the Firth of Clyde. This view of the south façade was taken in 1904 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The grey-harled south-facing garden front of the house, with its unorthodox pattern of windows, contains the principal rooms. The receding gable (right) contains the service and nursery wing and, in the angle, is a stair-tower with a simple conical cap. The site was purchased in 1902 by the publisher, William Blackie who was attracted to Helensburgh by the sea air and the ease of travel to Glasgow. The house was completed in 1904 and remained in the ownership of the Blackie family for 50 years. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
