Scope and Content View from north of The Hill House, Upper Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh Hill House, Helensburgh was designed in 1902-4 on a hilltop site by the architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, for the Glasgow publisher, Walter Blackie. It was photographed in 1904, on its completion, by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The striking feature of the north façade is the curved wall of the principal staircase tower, lit by a series of tall leaded lights. The effect is streamlined and modernist in comparison to the little dormer windows (left) which are traditional in origin. William Blackie operated his publishing business from Glasgow with branches throughout the Empire. His art director, Talwin Morris, who designed the Art Nouveau covers for his books, recommended Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the Hill House commission. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
