Scope and Content Master Bedroom, Hill House, Upper Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh The master bedroom, designed for the Glasgow publisher, Walter Blackie, was meticulously planned by the architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This photograph, taken in 1904 by Harry Bedford Lemere, shows Mackintosh's original scheme of decoration. The room has a barrel-vaulted ceiling, white-painted wardrobes with stained glass panels, an inglenook settle, a fireplace with steel and tile surround, a dark ladder-back chair, an Art Nouveau full-length dressing mirror, and a pendant light-fitting. Mackintosh's original interior included extensive wall stencilwork in an ornate pattern of trellis and roses. Later, the walls were painted stark white, and this photograph provides an invaluable record of the architect's intended decorative scheme. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
