Scope and Content Cross-inscribed stone, Kirkmadrine Church, Wigtownshire The origins of Christianity in Scotland are found in Galloway. Bishop Ninian is thought to have arrived in the first half of the 5th century and may have been invited by an existing Christian community. He built a church, known as Candida Casa. This is one of the earliest Christian monuments in Scotland. It commemorates two priests or bishops, Viventius and Mavorius. It is inscribed with the Chi-rho symbol (combining the cross with a Greek abbreviation of Christ's name similar to the letter P). A version of the Alpha and Omega is above the Chi-rho. Similar crosses have been found in France. This connection is reflected in the dedication of the church at Whithorn, established by St Ninian, to St Martin of Tours.
