Scope and Content Cross-inscribed stone, Kirkmadrine, Wigtownshire The origins of Christianity in Scotland are found in Galloway. Bishop Ninian is thought to have arrived in the first half of the 5th century and may have been invited by an existing Christian community. He built a church, known as Candida Casa. This cross-inscribed stone is one of the earliest Christian monuments in Scotland. It bears the Chi-rho (combining the cross with a Greek abbreviation of Christ's name similar to the letter P). The Latin reads as 'the beginning and the end'. Similar crosses, also dating to the 6th century, have been found in France. This connection is also reflected in the dedication of the church at Whithorn, established by St Ninian to St Martin of Tours. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
