Scope and Content View from rear of gun emplacement, Neb Battery, Flotta, Orkney Islands Neb Battery was built during World War II as one of the coast batteries defending the Cantick Sound entrance to Scapa Flow. This quick-firing battery was to stop motor torpedo boats and other fast moving hostile craft entering the Flow. This view from the rear of the twin six-pounder gun emplacement looking down Cantick Sound. In the foreground are the rails for the ammunition trolleys and then the circular plate and bolts of the gun holdfast. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
