Scope and Content View of gun holdfast, Neb Battery, Flotta, Orkney Islands Neb Battery was constructed during World War II to help close Cantick Sound, one of the entrances to Scapa Flow, to hostile fast moving craft and motor torpedo boats. This shows the gun holdfast for the twin six-pounder, quick-firing gun. The circular plate with the bolts secured the pedestal that mounted the gun. The set of rails behind this once mounted the ammunition trolley. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
