Scope and Content General view from the west of Neb Battery, Flotta, Orkney Islands Neb Battery was built during World War II as one of the coast batteries defending the Cantick Sound entrance to Scapa Flow. The battery was built to stop hostile fast moving craft and motor torpedo boats from entering the Flow. This shows a general view of Neb Battery with the director tower and gun emplacement below. The top observation post directed the gun while the lower one controlled the searchlights. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
