Scope and Content View of Neb Battery from east of 12-pounder emplacement of Gate Battery, Flotta, Orkney Islands Neb and Gate Batteries were constructed during World War II to help close the Cantick Sound entrance to Scapa Flow to hostile motor torpedo boats and other fast moving craft. This view shows the director tower (centre) of the twin six-pounder, quick-firing battery with the gun emplacement on the left. The other structure around the tower being the magazine or ammunition store, gun store and crew shelter. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
