Scope and Content General view from east, Neb and Gate Batteries, Flotta, Orkney Islands Gate and Neb Batteries were two of the coast batteries constructed during World War II to close the Cantick Sound to enemy fast moving craft trying to penetrate Scapa Flow. This shows Gate Battery No 2 12-pounder, quick-firing gun emplacement with Neb Battery twin six-pounder, quick-firing gun emplacement with its director tower behind. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
